Le groupe

 

En 1993, suite à la rencontre du chanteur Serj Tankian et du guitariste Daron Malakian, qui fréquentaient le même studio d'enregistrement, le groupe Soil est fondé par ces deux derniers, rejoint par le batteur Andranik Khatchadurian et un bassiste. Après un concert, le groupe demande à Shavo Odadjian de manager Soil. Il accepte aussitôt car il adorait le groupe et ses membres. Plus tard, Shavo devient le bassiste du groupe, et le batteur est désormais John Dolmayan. C'est la naissance de System Of A Down, un groupe que j'aurais tendance à classer dans un style assez heavy-métal, avec ses influences arméniennes...

 

Les chansons du groupe ont pour thèmes la politique, le social, la colère, l'humour, l'amour, la haine et la drogue. Mais Serj Tankian souligne qu'ils font avant tout de la musique parce qu'ils aiment ça, et non seulement pour annoncer leur point de vue politique. Mais le groupe restera malgré tout musicalement lui-même, nous affirme le chanteur.

 

Le groupe sort son premier album, éponyme, en 1998 ; un album diversifié, avec un gros son, et par-dessus tout, un chant admirable de la part de Serj Tankian. Petit à petit, System Of A Down voit son succès grandir. Après avoir fait la première partie de Slayer, System Of A Down participe au Summer Sanitarium 2000, une gigantesque tournée américaine, accompagné par Metallica, KoRn et Kid Rock.

 

Le deuxième album, connu sous le nom de Toxicity, est dans les bacs à partir de 2001, suite à une année entière de composition. Produit par Rick Rubin, cet album connaît un succès immense, avec notamment 3 millions d'exemplaires vendus uniquement aux USA.

 

Steal This Album, en français "vole cet album", c'est le nom du troisième album du groupe, sortit en fin 2002. La tracklist regroupe majoritairement des inédits, enregistrés jusque là sans avoir été sortis en cd. L'occasion pour le groupe de tourner le clip de Boom, très controversé, où le groupe nous montre fortement son opposition à la guerre en Irak.
